When Is the Solar Eclipse in Iceland?

The solar eclipse date Iceland is:

Wednesday, 12 August 2026

This will be the first total solar eclipse visible from parts of Iceland in decades, making it an incredibly special event for locals and visitors alike. The eclipse will pass across western Iceland, with areas inside the path of totality experiencing complete darkness for around one to two minutes, depending on location.

What Time Is the Solar Eclipse in Iceland?

The exact timing depends on where you are.

Generally:

  • Partial eclipse begins around 4:47 PM
  • Totality begins around 5:48 PM
  • Maximum eclipse occurs just before 5:59 PM
  • The event finishes around 6:47 PM

Because viewing times vary slightly across Iceland, it’s worth checking the official timings for your chosen destination before travelling.

You can find more accurate information on viewing times here: https://eclipse2026.is/where-to-see

Where to See the Solar Eclipse in Iceland

While the eclipse will be visible across much of Iceland, only western areas inside the path of totality will experience the full event.

Some of the best locations include:

The capital will experience totality for approximately one minute, making it one of the easiest places to watch the eclipse. However, it’s also expected to be one of the busiest.

📍 Recommended Viewing Locations in Snæfellsnes

  • Arnarstapi – A picturesque coastal village with wide ocean views.
  • Hellnar – Quiet seaside cliffs offering an excellent viewing location.
  • Djúpalónssandur – A dramatic black sand beach surrounded by lava fields.

The Westfjords

For the longest duration of totality, the Westfjords are expected to provide some of the best viewing conditions in Iceland. They’re also among the country’s most remote and scenic destinations.

📍 Recommended Viewing Locations in the Westfjords

  • Látrabjarg Cliffs – Iceland’s westernmost point and one of the best places to experience the longest totality.
  • Breiðavík Beach – A wide sandy beach with open views towards the horizon.

One question we’re hearing frequently is:

How busy will Iceland be for the solar eclipse?

Very busy.

The solar eclipse 2026 is expected to attract astronomy enthusiasts, photographers and travellers from around the world. Accommodation, rental cars and popular viewing locations are already seeing high demand, and experts recommend booking well in advance.

If you’re planning to visit Iceland in August 2026 for the Solar Eclipse, it’s wise to:

  • Choose a viewing destination ahead of time
  • Arrive at your destination early
  • Ensure you are up to date on any road closures
  • Allow time for after the Eclipse for any traffic

Should I Rent a Car to See the Solar Eclipse?

For most visitors, the answer is yes.

Public transport in Iceland is limited, particularly outside Reykjavík, and organised tours will likely fill up quickly.

Choosing an Iceland car rental gives you several advantages:

  • Freedom to choose your viewing location.
  • Ability to change plans if weather forecasts improve elsewhere.
  • Access to quieter viewpoints away from crowds.
  • Opportunity to turn the eclipse into an unforgettable Iceland road trip.

With your own vehicle, you’re not restricted by tour schedules or fixed itineraries.

Do I need a 4×4 Iceland?

For most eclipse visitors, no.

If you plan to stay around:

  • Reykjavík
  • Reykjanes
  • The Golden Circle
  • Snæfellsnes (via the main roads)

an economy car or standard SUV is usually sufficient during August.

However, a 4×4 rental Iceland can offer additional confidence if you:

  • Plan to explore remote regions like the Westfjords.
  • Want greater ground clearance on gravel roads.
  • Intend to continue your Iceland adventure beyond the eclipse.

A 4×4 isn’t required for most paved roads, but it does provide added flexibility for travellers planning a longer self-drive holiday.

Why Renting a Car Gives You the Best Chance of Seeing the Eclipse

One thing no one can control is Iceland’s weather.

Cloud cover can change quickly, and the difference between seeing totality and missing it entirely may simply be driving an hour in another direction.

Having your own car rental Iceland means you can:

  • Check updated weather forecasts throughout the day.
  • Travel towards clearer skies.
  • Avoid crowded organised tour groups.
  • Discover scenic locations that many visitors never reach.

This flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of renting a car for the solar eclipse 2026 Iceland.

Turn the Eclipse Into an Iceland Road Trip

Rather than flying in for just one day, many visitors are extending their stay to explore Iceland.

Popular routes include:

  • The Golden Circle
  • South Coast waterfalls and black sand beaches
  • Snæfellsnes Peninsula
  • Reykjanes Peninsula
  • The Westfjords
  • Ring Road adventures

With an Iceland car rental, you can experience far more than the eclipse itself while travelling at your own pace.
