Road tolls in Iceland
Road tolls in Iceland are only collected in 1 location. In the Vaðlaheiðargöng tunnels located in the Northern Iceland. The tunnel is 7.5 km long and lies through a mountain between Eyjafjörður and Fnjóskadalur. Along with the tunnel the drive from Akureyri to Húsavík is shortened by 16 km and drivers can now bypass the mountain road Víkurskarð where road conditions are often difficult during winter.
What seems to confuse travelers when going through the tunnel is that there is no toll booth to pay in. This is an automatic system that reads the license plate number on your car when you enter the tunnels. You therefore need to register the car online before you enter the tunnels or up to 3 hours after you pass through.
How can I pay for my trip through the Tunnel?
1. Visit www.tunnel.is
2. Enter the license plate number of the car (it's on the keychain)
3. Press confirm for make, color and weight of the car (you don't need to make any changes here)
Make sure you entered the correct license plate number.
4. Choose a period
a. For a single trip you can choose expiration date now
b. For multiple trips you can choose expiration date at the end of your rental/other date.
All trips until the expiration date will be directly charged to your credit card.
5. Enter your credit card information, email and phone number.
You can register any time before your trip through the tunnel but you have to register no later than 3 hours after your trip.
If you don't pay yourself the tunnel fee will be charged by Thrifty to your credit card along with an administration fee. See more information about administration fees.
