Sand and ash storms in Iceland are one of the most unexpected—and underestimated—hazards for travelers. Many visitors are surprised to learn that these storms are actually quite common, especially in the south of Iceland where volcanic deserts and glacial outwash plains are widespread. While they may sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, sand and ash storms are a real threat to rental cars in Iceland, even when driving along the main Ring Road (Route 1).

These storms can occur at any time of year, but the risk is significantly higher during dry and windy conditions, especially in spring and autumn. When strong winds pick up loose volcanic ash or sand, they can blast the sides of your rental car—scratching paint, damaging windows, and leading to costly repair bills that are not always covered by standard insurance. Certain regions near Vík, Mýrdalssandur, and Skeiðarársandur are particularly prone to this natural phenomenon.
To reduce the risk of damage during your self-drive trip in Iceland, we highly recommend checking wind forecasts on vedur.is before hitting the road, especially when heading east or south. Always consider adding sand and ash protection coverage when renting a car in Iceland—it could save you hundreds (or even thousands) in unexpected repair costs.
